CLINT. POP WILL EAT ITSELF
Best Gig Ever Seen:
'The Psychedelic Furs at JB's in 1979. 1 was pretty young and JB's was a legendary club round then. The Furs started with 'India' - it's a big row that number! It had a brilliant feel to it Butler was probably just the best front man I've ever seen! He was smashing the mike stand all over the place, which can look really contrived and wow aren't I rock hard and arrogant, and the guy was totally cool. I was in awe of the gig, and in awe of the band ... I was 15, maybe 16, I s'pose.
"There was only like 500 people there! It probably had something to do with what was going on at the time: 1979 you had the hangover of punk, and a lot of shit punk bands -
maybe only The Banshees were any good at the time. Well maybe The Clash and of course The Jam were still good. But nothing else was happening. All the other bands at the time were pretty crap really. And the Furs came along and they weren't a punk band - they were raucous and exciting, but totally different
"The clothes and the hair were all totally different, the style of music, albeit rough and ready if you like, wasn't punk but it was still noisy! I watched at the front and I couldn't move; I was mesmerised by them. I stood there watching - they had this oil wheel going round, psychedelic. I'd seen people before, like The Buzzcocks and The Ramones which were great but this was something different. It was like, I don't know ... brilliant."
Worst Gig Ever Played:
"The worst gig you over played is always the last shit one you've done. If you think you're gig's crap, it's when it's your fault, and that was like Pop Will Eat Itself at The Town & Country Club a month ago. We were shit that night because it was our fault - a couple of things went wrong and I had too much to drink. So I didn't handle the situation quite as well as I should.
"But the Public Enemy gigs were just a shock - they weren't crap. We were abused and spat at, had coins thrown at us, cans, fireworks, umbrellas - anything! What people didn't want they were chucking at us!!! They weren't crap gigs, they were just shocking. I couldn't believe it I couldn't believe what was going on - with all the gigs I've been to, and all the gigs I've done, I've never seen a level of violence that high! Was I shitting myself onstage? Absolutely! Yeah!"
"We did two nights at Brixton; the first night we just couldn't believe what was going on. The tour manager asked us to come off because he said someone was going to get hurt. We know what to expect the following night, so we were shitting ourselves before we went on... but we showed Public Enemy up that night."
