Can U Dig It?

"Can you dig it?"

This is taken from a 70's (or early 80's) American film called The Warriors. At one point in the film, it is chanted by the Rifs' leader, Cyrus, so as to excite the crowd.

"[s]OK, let's get down to it, boppers"

The song's intro is from the same movie as mentioned above in the title, The Warriors. Coincidentally, Renegade Soundwave uses this sample as well on their debut album, "Soundclash".

"Remote Control"

This was the name of an awful Channel 4 TV game show presented by Tony Wilson (founder of Factory Records).

Furry Freak Brothers

This is the name of a comic strip from the 1960s. It was an underground strip in the grand tradition of Zap, Near Myths, etc.

The Twilight Zone

This was originally a TV show from the 1960s featuring stories of the wonderful and weird. The show seems to have been prety much an endless source of ideas for the Poppies so far, including a number of song titles.

Marvel and DC

These are probably the two biggest comic companies in North America right now, and most definitely were at the time of the recording.

Run-DMC
This is the rap band that pretty much opened the way for rap music to move into a more mainstream flow. They are well known for their cover of "Walk This Way" done with the original band, Aerosmith. This reference could possibly be a dig at them since the Poppies supported them on a somewhat ill-fated European tour. The Poppies were booed offstage because of their use of guitars. They left the tour after four shows.

"Renegade Soundwave"

A pioneering, yet under-rated UK dance band. Classics such as 'Biting My Nails' went a long way to providing the PWEI sound c. 1989. The band have had 5 albums out (I think), and Danny Hyde, who is affiliated with the band somehow (stage name perhaps?), has remixed PWEI tracks such as Cicciolina and Underbelly (Side note: Danny Hyde has done a lot of remixing with the band Coil remixing many other groups' material, including Nine Inch Nails). The band itself is made up of Danny Broitette and Gary Asquith, which are the names given on the records, but any remixes related to Renegade Soundwave are done by Danny Broitette, so Danny Hyde could be a stage name.
Also, this could be referring to the Transformers. In the first episode, Soundwave (the robot that turned into a tape deck) was an Autobot (a good guy), but by the third or fourth episode/comic he became a Decepticon (one of the bad guys), so he was something of a renegade...

AC/DC

This can be one of two things. It is either the Australian band of the same name or else it can refer to the electrical wiring system used today.

Bruce Wayne

Batman's alter-ego. This would be somewhat fitting since the first Batman movie (the one by Tim Burton) came out around this time with Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker.
From F.

Auf Wiedersehen

German for goodbye, of course - but it is also possible that the band were referring to a 1980's comedy-drama called Auf Wiedersehen Pet which followed the exploits of a group of Geordie (ie. from Newcastle) builders who worked illegally on a building site in Germany. A second series saw them get involved in some dodgy dealings in Spain.

The Dirty Harry files are a series of films starring Clint Eastwood as the title character. The "Go ahead, make my day" line is oft quoted from these films even though he only says it once or twice throughout the entire series.

Alan Moore

Alan Moore is not just a reknowned comic author, he is more particularly the author of V For Vendetta which is referred to in the lyrics. Also, he happens to be the author of The Watchmen, as mentioned in Def. Con. One. Incidentally, Alan Moore once made a record with David J from Bauhaus, under the name V For Vendetta, featuring songs relating to the comic series.

This is from the comic books and TV series (complete with two or three movies) called the Transformers. This story featured two groups of opposing robots, the Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the Decepticons, led by Galvatron I believe.
